We've had a couple discussions about addiction on this show. One of the first episodes was with Sterling after going through his personal addiction and overdose before getting clean and finding a new, better life for himself. Then an episode with Andrew about the mechanics of rehab and relapse. Now we are approaching it from another angle with my guest today, to see how you can spot, love, and support an addict
in your life without enabling their illness further.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Michaela Canterbury. Michaela and her family are made up of high functioning business professionals and elite athletes, so when they discovered a heroin addiction in the family it caught everyone off guard. Isn't this something that only affects people who were lacking opportunity and education? Turns out that's not at all the case, and they had to scramble to establish how their family team was going to deal with this issue. Spoiler alert: Addiction doesn't care about your well laid out plans or good intentions.
Things did, fortunately, work out in the end, but the experience as a whole gives Michaela a unique perspective that she can help others with. Today you'll hear the story of her sister and their family from discovery to recovery. Hopefully it can help shed light on the reality of addictions reach and the ways you can help.
